List of United States federal judges by longevity of service
Encyclopedia
This is a list of United States federal judge
United States federal judge
In the United States, the title of federal judge usually means a judge appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the United States Senate in accordance with Article II of the United States Constitution....

s
by longevity of service. It is meant to only cover those federal judges who have set records for longevity of service, and is therefore limited to judges who have held served on the federal bench for over 40 years. It is divided up into several categories. One difficulty in determining the length of service for federal judges is the development of senior status
Senior status
Senior status is a form of semi-retirement for United States federal judges, and judges in some state court systems. After federal judges have reached a certain combination of age and years of service on the federal courts, they are allowed to assume senior status...

. A judge may enter senior status upon completing a certain number of years of active service by a certain age, and may continue in senior status while taking (or being available to take) a much reduced workload. In practice, some judges in senior status have remained very active on the bench, while others have been almost completely inactive. Prior to the establishment of senior status in the 1920s, some federal judges of very advanced age were "active" although effectively retired or unable to perform their duties, as they could not easily be removed from office. Thus, the length of service, whether active or senior, may not always accurately reflect the level of activity maintained by a federal judge.

In cases where there is a tie in time the following criteria will sort people higher:
  1. Achieved the time during active service rather than senior status
  2. Achieved the time first
  3. Supreme Court Justices over Court of Appeals Judges over District Court judges (combined list only)
  4. Achieved the time uninterrupted (total tenure rank only)

Amongst currently sitting federal judges, there are forty senior judges and one active judge on these lists.
