Yoh Asakura

(麻倉 葉, Asakura Yō)

The main protagonist of shaman king. Yoh wants to become Shaman King to fulfill his promise to his fiancée, Anna Kyoyama. In the anime Anna saved Yoh and because of this he promised Anna that he would make her the Shaman Queen when he becomes the Shaman king.Yoh is Hao's twin brother and when they were born,to protect the world they were going to kill both, something that did not happened thanks to Hao.Yoh is leader of team Asakura(A name Ryu picked) and his gurdian spirit is Amidamaru. In the manga, it is Yoh who saved Anna. Yoh is also the human side of Asakura Hao, an immensely powerful shaman who reincarnated himself in order to be able to participate in the Shaman Fight. The shaman side and human side of Hao were separated when their birth mother, Keiko Asakura, gave birth to twins. Yoh is part of the Team Funbari Onsen (The name of the inn Anna wants to build). In the manga Yoh also goes to Hell to train, an honor given to him by Lady Sati, and is granted the power of purification. He becomes one of the Five Elemental Warriors and gains the Spirit of Earth.

Anna Kyōyama

(恐山アンナ, Kyōyama Anna)

Anna is Yoh Asakura's fiance. She is an itako or a spirit medium in English. She is described to be very clever and hates humans at first. Her special ability is channeling spirits even from heaven. She "tortures" Yoh in summer in order to win the Shaman Tournament and she also wishes to be Shaman Queen. She is also very powerful despite of her looks.

After being abandoned by her birth parents due to her abilities, Anna was adopted by Kino Asakura.

Aggressive and decisive, Anna is a pragmatic person who, to most, appears cold and harsh. However, she has shown that she genuinely cares for those important to her, especially Yoh, and merely is dedicated to be "the ultimate Shaman Queen" and wife to Yoh, the first real friend that she ever had in her life. She holds a deep gratitude for Yoh for saving her life that's why she thinks it's her responsibility as Yoh's Wife to train him hard to make his dream come true to be the Shaman King (though she tells Yoh and the others that it's for her own dream).

Anna's spiritual strength is shown as she was able to seal in Hao Asakura's guardian spirits (called as shikigami)- Zenki and Kouki, and was able to control them. Anna and Hao seem to have an odd relationship of their own - Anna detests Hao and even slapped him once. Surprisingly, he was not angry, but actually seemed amused. It has also been hinted that Anna is the reincarnation of the original Asakura Hao's mother from 1000 years ago, Asano-Ha; others think that Hao possibly had feelings of his own for Anna and wanted her for himself. It is obvious that Anna loves Yoh, despite how badly she seems to treat him - she said it when Yoh fought the oh-oni to save her, once to his friend Manta Oyamada, and again to Silva, a commissioner for the Shaman Fight. She broke down crying when she thought that Yoh was about to be killed while being possessed by Tokagero. Anna can be extremely possessive of Yoh, beating him up once when she thought that the Oracle Bell he brought home was a woman's pager. She also reacted jealously when Yoh asked Tamao Tamamura to cook him a meal in the anime. When Yoh was thought to be dead after Hao stole his soul, Anna was in hysterics, and only recovered her strength when Yoh returned. Anna attends Shinra Private Academy along with Yoh and Manta. Her favourite singer in the manga, Ringo Awaya, is a reference to Japanese singer and guitarist Shiina Ringo.

Manta Oyamada

(小山田まん太, Oyamada Manta, Mortimer "Morty" in the English anime and video games)

Manta is an intelligent child who carries a book around with him every day. In the Japanese versions, the book is called the Manjien (万辞苑), meaning "Manta's Book on Everything", while the English manga calls the book the "Mantannian Dictionary". "Manjien" comes from Manta's name and the Japanese dictionary "Kōjien" (広辞苑). Manta is 13 years old and a 7th grader at Shinra Private Academy; Manta goes to school with Yoh and Anna.

In the English anime, Morty is a fan of ghost stories and the book he carries around is a ghost story book.

Manta can see spirits, but cannot use their powers like his best friends Yoh Asakura and Anna Kyōyama can. He is very expressive and a bit panicky. He physically resembles a Koropokkur (known as "minutians" in the English anime), and has been mistaken for one of the shy nature spirits on several occasions

In the anime, during the Shaman Tournament, Manta became a shaman, his spirit is Mosuke, Amidamaru's best friend who forged Harusame (Sword of Light in the English anime). He is however not capable of maintaining spirit form because he runs out of furyoku and ends up in trouble. In the battle with Hao, he used his oversoul to knockout Hao's Shikigami's. His ghost combines with his laptop, where he is usually at and cannot escape, and forms a hammer. This can also be seen as a parallel to the relationship of Amidamaru and Mosuke as neither Amidamaru and Mosuke nor Yoh and Manta were away from each other for very long and Mosuke and Amidamaru are spirit partners with Manta and Yoh respectively.

In the manga and original Japanese anime, his family owns the Oyamada Electronics Company, and therefore is very rich. Manta's parents and little sister only appear in the manga. Manta's father, Mansumi Oyamada, is 55 years old. His mother, Keiko Oyamada, is 37 years old. His sister, Mannoko Oyamada, is 5 years old. Manta's family plays little role in the story, and, following their initial appearance, they are never seen again in the manga until a brief appearance by Mansumi toward the end of the series, where the Oyamada president leads several battle ships to destroy and capture Shamans.

In the manga and Japanese anime, Manta has an assistant, Tamurazaki. In the English anime, Tamurazaki (who turns out to be Mansumi's lapdog and guns down at least one of Hao's followers) is "Uncle Jerry" and is Morty's uncle.

Hao Asakura

The main antagonist of Shaman King, Hao Asakura is a member of the Asakura family. An Onmyōji priest, Hao failed to win his first Shaman King tournament but was able to reincarnate with full awareness of his past life in time to participate in the next tournament and again for the current tournament.

In his second life, Hao was reincarnated as a member of the Patch tribe and was successful in taking control of the Spirit of Fire, an elemental spirit that embodies the essence of one of the five elements of nature. Currently Hao was reincarnated as identical twins, with his soul split between Yoh and himself. Following his rebirth, Hao escaped from the Asakura family with the help of the Spirit of Fire.

In the months leading up to the tournament Hao began to kill prospective competition while gathering an entourage to assist him in winning the current Shaman King tournament.

Hao's Furyoku is 1,250,000, an extremely high level compared with the other characters' Furyoku levels in Shaman King.

(manga)
Hao is the founder of the Asakura family and is regarded as a master of the Wu Xing pentagram, being able to control the 5 elements that give form to creation. His Spirit of Fire is one of the five elemental spirits in the great spirit. Hao actually first lived 1000 years ago from the time period in the manga, and Yoh is one of his great descendants. Despite being the founder of the Asakura, he is defeated by them, but manages to reincarnate 500 years later. In his first reincarnation he is reincarnated into the Patch tribe (the ancient tribe that run the Shaman fight) and is defeated by Asakura Yohken (another ancestor of Yoh)and Matumune a spirit that has been in the Asakura family for 1000 years and was Hao's best friend during his first life. He had a wife and son, ancestors of Silva of the ten Patch officiants. Hao then decides to reincarnate back into his family. Asakura Mikihisa, knowing Hao would reincarnate into his pregnant wife, tells her and they both agree to kill the baby as soon as it is born, with Asakura Yohmei to do the honors (Keiko's father.) But fate decides that Mikihisa's wife will have twins and so Hao is born in two halfs, Hao himself as his shaman half, and Yoh as his human half. When the shaman half is born, and before they get a chance to kill it, the Spirit of Fire saves baby Hao, and they decide the spare the other twin (Yoh)

Ryunosuke Umemiya

Ryu (梅宮 竜之介, Umemiya Ryūnosuke, "Rio" in the English anime)

"Wooden Sword" Ryu in the beginning of Shaman King is a gang leader who is always on the lookout for the Best Place (The Happy Place in the English manga and The Sacred Hang in the English anime; His gang is known as the Dead Enders in the English anime).

In the manga, he is seen to first have a grudge against Yoh for slicing his hair off (this is a running gag throughout the first part of the series) and then discovers that Yoh has a fiancee, after trying to 'woo' Anna Kyoyama. He goes off to his gang's new 'Best Place' which is the run down Funbari Bowl, where he breaks down and believes the 'Headphones Kid', is ruining his life. He gets possessed by Tokagero who offers him a chance for revenge and kill Yoh. At the same time, Tokagero is wanting revenge on Amidamaru. The possessed Ryu breaks into the museum, and steals Harusame, at the same time kidnapping Manta.[5]

He confronts Yoh and Amidamaru, and orders Amidamaru to integrate with his master so they can fight.[6] He tricks Amidamaru into attacking Harusame and fights back with a technique called Tokage Kenpo (Lizard Style).[7] Tokagero mocks Amidamaru saying that the same blade that was supposed to save him will take his life instead this time. After remembering how much Harusame was important, Amidamaru breaks Harusame and Tokagero is surprised. Yoh says that Tokagero had already lost, because of Amidamaru's long life commitment to his friend Mosuke. He tells him that he should rest in peace and move on. Tokagero refuses and says he'll die and Amidamaru with him. Ryu's gang then attack him, and say that they don't want Ryu to become a scumbag, and they'll always be friends with Ryu no matter what happens.

Soon after, Tokagero pulls out a knife and tries to kill Ryu, but the painful stress of two souls in one body makes him unable to control Ryu body, he discover that if he doesn't leave Ryu's body than Ryu will die, but Tokagero pretty comfortable with that. Having no other option, Yoh offers Tokagero to possess him, which he does. After saying it was foolish, Tokagero tries to kill Yoh, but realises that he can't do that and he is lectured again on how important trust is and being alone was painful for him, and after receiving trust from Yoh he doesn't need to take revenge, because he realised that revenge wasn't something he needed in the first place. This ends this struggle, and later Tokagero becomes Ryu's guardian ghost.

Tao Ren

(道 蓮 Tao Ren, Dào Lián)

Tao Ren is shorter than Yoh and most of his friends, at 4'9", but he seems to look taller when the length of the spike in his hair is added up. This spike is a part of his hairstyle called tongari.

He is relatively thin, and his spiked hair is a shade of dark purple. Ren's eyes are golden in the anime, but in the manga's colored pages, they usually appear golden, brown or the same color as his hair.

His street are his school uniform; a pair of black shorts, a tucked-in, white dress shirt, a yellow jacket, a dark green tie and a pair of brown . When he was to travel to America, his old jacket was worn-out, so his mother gave him a similar one. When traveling through the country he wears a black coat, a yellow scarf, long pants and brown leather shoes.

When he left to America, he also brought with him a new battle uniform, that is inspired by Kung Fu cloth. It consists of black pants, with an open triangular pattern along both sides and yellow lining, that are tied with a thin white scarf. He also wears a black vest tied together in a triangular pattern that also has yellow lining with a midsection revealing his midriff. The vest also has an opening in the back outlining his Tao tattoo. Even though he brought it with him from before the start of the Shaman Fight, the reason why he never wore it during the fights in America was because they were all so sudden, that he never had the chance to change.

In the anime he wears a similar battle uniform during the second round of the Shaman Fight, only difference being that he wore a red vest, and simple black pants. Although of this, he is still seen a couple of times wearing this suit in the manga series as a casual outfit during the Second Rounds of the Shaman Fights.

He is serious, logical, and emotionally aloof. He has become like this because of how he was raised. Because of his father Tao Yúan (Tao En), Ren had adapted a deep hatred towards humanity and a strong yearning to eliminate them all. He also believed that his spirit companion, Bason, was only meant to be used as a tool and to treat him as a friend would only result in the spirit taking advantage over him. Ren's anger and hatred came from his father (or uncle in the English anime). Forced to train and study at a very young age, Ren had his childhood stolen from him. He hated Tao En for all of his suffering.

Ren tries hard to maintain a tough and confident exterior and is aloof, but deep down would risk his life for his allies. Ren is a particularly impatient person with a very short temper, and isn't afraid to hurt the source of the anger.

Ren is an egotistical person and usually doesn't care that people think that he's overly proud. He even named his own team, Team "The Ren", much to the annoyance of his teammate, Horohoro. His overflowing self-confidence annoys some of the other characters. In addition, Ren is also very intuitive, quick-witted, and sometimes stubborn. He is also very defiant. He rarely listens to what anyone says or takes their instructions. Before and during the process in which he befriended Asakura Yoh, he even was bold enough to disobey his father on various occasions.

As the Shaman Fight progresses, Ren begins to trust others more. Out of all his friends, his bonds with Yoh and Horohoro seem to be the strongest. Ren often fights with Horohoro and the two do not seem to get along at all. However, after Ren is fatally stabbed by Peyote Diaz, it becomes apparent that they really do care for one another. As Faust VIII worked to try to save Ren's life after the incident, Horohoro did his best to protect the dying Ren.

As a human Ren has a very strong body as evidence by his tough and constant training. He is very skilled in martial arts and sword fighting, in addition to also learning techniques by just watching them as he was able to learn many of Mikihisa Asakura's techniques simply by experiencing them firsthand, and also learning to use Oversoul by just seeing Chrome use his. It is mentioned that Ren is skilled in more than one area of combat. He is a powerful shaman capable of doing things most shamans his age would not be able to. He is one of only a handful of shamans that can actually stare straight into the heart of the Great Spirit without fainting. The only others that can do this would be Iron Maiden Jeanne, Asakura Hao, and possibly Lady Sati.

In the manga, he becomes one of the Five Elemental Warriors and gains the Spirit of Thunder. His element is reflected in his weapon, the Hou Rai Ken (Jewel Thunder) sword, and according to Pascal Avaf, The Spirit of Thunder follows the way of taoism. While fighting his way through the Plants, Kyōyama Anna looked through the Furyoku values of Ren and the others. There it is revealed that his Furyoku is about 100,001 though it might be higher due to him dying a few times and being brought back.

In the future it is strongly implied that he has married Iron Maiden Jeanne. They have a son named Men who in appearance is an exact replica of Ren, except for the red eyes and light colored hair from Jeanne.

Horohoro

(ホロホロ,Horohoro)

Horohoro is an Ainu from Hokkaidō, a prefecture in Japan. In the English anime, he is described as from "the Northern Woods" instead of from Hokkaidō. Horohoro's main goal in the Shaman Fight is to save the Koro Pokkuru ("Minutians" in the English anime), a tiny spirit people. As part of this goal, he intends to plant a vast field of Butterbur. His guardian ghost is Kororo ("Corey" in the English anime), a spirit who is smitten with Manta Oyamada. Also in the manga, he becomes the third strongest of the Five Elemental Warriors and gains the Spirit of Rain. His furyoku is 120,000 (as seen in chapter 276). This, oddly, makes him "technically" stronger than both Yoh and Tao Ren, who have more importance in the series than he does, who have only 108,000 and 100,001 furyoku respectively.

Horohoro is good-natured and cheerful, but he gets serious in dangerous situations. He argues constantly with his teammate Tao Ren, and they do not seem to get along at all. However, it is shown that he really does care for him when, in the manga, he tells Yoh Asakura that if he can't save Ren, as his friend, HoroHoro would never forgive him. Horohoro is also very secretive about his past not willing to talk about it even to his friends. In addition, Horohoro can also get very competitive, even going so far as to turn Ryu's arms to ice and shatter them during the fight between The Ren and Funbari Onsen. Horohoro's name sounds and is spelled (in Katakana) like "boroboro," which means "crap". Characters mispronouncing/misspelling his name is a running gag in the series. It is later revealed that Horohoro's real name is Usui Horokeu.

Faust VIII

(ファウストVIII世, Fausuto Hassei)

Hailing from Germany, Johann Faust VIII is the eighth-generation descendant of the legendary Doctor Faustus. His ancestor is the main character of the renowned German tale, "The Tragedy of Doctor Faustus", as the man who was so consumed by lust for all the pleasures of the world, he made a deal with the devil to gain them. For with necromancy skills, the Devil (more commonly known as Mephistopheles in Faust literature) also granted Faustus youth and riches. In the end, Faustus died a terrible death when Mephistopheles came to claim his soul at the end of the seven year contract.

Faust is usually a very detailed and patient person who thinks scientifically unless the matter concerns his beloved Eliza. He does not tolerate interruptions while working (an example was having Eliza keep the X-Laws at bay, while he attempted to help Jeanne), and even less any criticism, insults or threats directed at Eliza.

Faust is the embodiment of dedication; he has given up everything for his wife and is willing to do anything, no matter the costs to protect and take care of her. It is this single-mindedness and selflessness that gives him his great strength in the Shaman Fight. Beyond all the mental instability, emotional suffering and somewhat gothic moods, his greatest strength comes from his pure heart; pure because he knows that he only lives to love and protect his dear Eliza.

Faust is an insane but incredibly brilliant medical doctor who delights in saving lives. Naturally, his work reveals facts of his personality. He cures one of his opponents after their shaman fight, an illness that many doctors have given up on previously. Because Faust had devoted much of his time to seeking cures for illnesses, he is utterly devastated when he is unable to save Eliza and goes as far as attempting to resurrect her. When he treats Jeanne of the X-laws, he does so with zeal that nears madness. During the time in between matches, he is usually reading medical books, and feeds himself breakfast, lunch, and dinner through an I.V. line.

Lyserg Diethel

(リゼルグ・ダイゼル, Rizerugu Daizeru)

The main antagonist for Hao Asakura (Zeke Asakura in the English Dub) when he killed his parents while he was still 6 (as seen in Chapter 87) and since then he has sought out revenge on Hao.

Lyserg, who was born in London, England, is also a dowser, a person who is able to find a person or persons using his special abilities. Lyserg uses his Crystal Pendulum for dowsing and over souls. He channels his over soul into his dowsing pendulum, allowing it to become a rope dart. His method of fighting with it consists of using high speed attacks that come out too fast for his opponent to react against.

At first, Lyserg joins with Yoh Asakura and the others, but later joins the X-Laws, a group dedicated to destroying Hao. When Lyserg joins them he is unsure about the ways the X-Laws try to eliminate Hao. Though Lyserg holds great hatred for Hao, Yoh's own philosophies and personalities keep him from crossing the line. In the anime he also tends to use stereotypical British phrases and words, such as "seen it on the telly" when referring to dowsing. Lyserg abandons his spirit Morphine for an angel spirit called Zeruel in the anime, but in the manga they are inseparable. Finally, he rejoins Yoh's team.

For his character, Lyserg is rather unstable when it comes to parent-child situations. He has a generally kind heart, although he becomes a bit of an anti-hero. Lyserg's dreams are to take revenge on Hao and to become a great detective much like his father. He is very passionate in his hatred for Hao, and will snap at the sight or sometimes even the mention of him. He is the most intelligent of the five warriors. He was born on May 17, 1986.

Lyserg's Furyoku is 170,000 (as seen in chapter 276)

His name is a reference to lysergic acid diethylamide. The name of his spirit, Morphine, is obviously a drug reference as well, referring to Sherlock Holmes' drug addictions. and had to be changed to Chloe and Morphea for the English anime and manga, due to US law.

Lyserg has a very androgynous appearance, often being mistaken for a girl by Umemiya Ryunosuke (among others). He has light green hair and lime eyes, which he inherited from his father.

He dresses in a similar fashion as his father, and in both cases their outfits were probably a homage to Sherlock Holmes. His clothes consist of a green cloak (similar to the one Sherlock Holmes wears), a white shirt with a white folded handkerchief and black pants and black leather shoes.

After Lyserg joined the X-Laws, Marco began training him and after swearing loyalty he was given a classical white uniform similar to the others. The main difference between his uniform and the others is that his skirt is completely open with nothing beneath but a pair of white short shorts and black sea boots, with bare legs. When not in his X-Laws uniform he wears a white dress shirt, with rolled up sleeves, a tie and suspenders, and a pair of short shorts, with his gun holster on the left side.

After training in hell, he discards his X-Laws uniform, and begins wearing clothes similar to his original ones except that he now wears a black cloak with a dark green lining, dark green short shorts. He wears a white dress shirt with rolled up sleeves, a white folded handkerchief and long dark green sea boots.

Joco

Joco, known as Chocolove McDonnell (チョコラブ・マクダネル,Chokorabu Makudaneru) in Japanese versions

Is an African-American shaman. He wants to be the Shaman King because he wants to spread comedy and laughter in the world.

The Patch Tribe

They are in charge of overseeing the smooth progress of the Shaman King and are in charge of various shamans e.g. Silva is in charge of Yoh Asakura. The Ten Priests are from the Patch tribe and their day is to sell Patch memorabilia and food items. It is revealed that each Priest has an area of field which he controls (mountains, valley, desert, water etc.). One Priest called Chrom was killed in volume 4 by Tao Ren. However, it seems a replacement for him has been found since there is mention of 10 Priests. Radim is the host/referee of the Shaman Fight. Some of the Patch had already placed their biased opinions by throwing their support to Hao's purposes. Fearful of his power at the same time, feeling protected by his overwhelming strength, they do their best to lower the esteem of the other contestants in the Shaman Fight.

Once the Shaman King has been revealed, the Patch become his protectors. Guarding both the new King of Spirits and Great Spirit as they merge into one. The characters' name are based on the chemical element

  • Silva (シルバ Shiruba, Shilva): A Native American of the Patch Tribe and a member of the Shaman Fight Selection Committee. He travels from the United States (The "Desert of the West" in the English anime) to Japan after being assigned to test Asakura Yoh. After some difficulty, Yoh lands a hit on Silva, passing the qualification test. Silva watches over Yoh after he defeats him in the qualification test, finding Yoh to have great potential and good will and must frequently refrain from directly interfering to aid Yoh. He often is seen as a street vendor, trying to sell traditional Native American crafts while in Japan. He spends the rest of his spare time watching soap operas. Silva has five familiars, who are luminous totems that have refined themselves for over 500 years: Silver Horn - an American Bison spirit that is attached to his right leg. By blowing out a blast of steam like how a normal bison would do out of his nose it increases Silva's kick power. Silver Rod - a snake spirit that is wrapped around his right arm, it is used to either bind opponents or to pierce them like a rod. Silver Shield - a turtle spirit that is attached to his left arm, when the opponent hits it reflects back the attack that may destroy his/her oversoul. Silver Tail - a coyote spirit attached to his left leg which enhances his running speed. Lastly Silver Wing - an eagle spirit that grant Silva a pair of wings and shoulder armor which not only allows him to fly but also the wings act like knives which allow him to cut through even the oversouls of his opponents. The five can combine to form a cannon used in the Totemic Soul Blast attack. The oversouls second combination is his " Flesh and blood" spear which takes on the form of combined organic animal parts, unlike his totem pole canon which looks completely mechanical. His plant is the glacier. In the sequel Shaman King: Flowers, Silva has a daughter whom he names after Anna.

  • Kalim (カリム, Karimu), one of Silva's best friends and organizers of the Shaman Fight, he tested and deemed Horohoro to be qualified to take part in the Shaman Fight. His birthday is April 24, 1971. His spirit partner is a bull named BlackSickle, with his medium being a bull skull and spine bones allowing BlackSickle to merge with the lower half of his body. He mainly uses charging attacks like how real bulls attack, either striking with a frontal attack or to crush them with powerful stomps. His plant is the plateau that he likes to farm on, there are even real cows and a farm house. He shares an apartment with Silva during the tournament in Tokyo, where the two constantly bicker over the heat (because they cannot afford an air conditioner and the summer is so warm and humid). Like Silva, Kalim sells handcrafted Patch goods to make somewhat of a living while in Tokyo. Kalim frequently provides a voice of reason to somewhat quell Silva's desire to interfere in the Shaman Tournament. Kalim is apparently hemaphobic. Following the trend of Patch priests being named after metals, Kalim's name derives from Kari (加里 or カリ), or Kariumu (カリウム) meaning potassium in Japanese (derived from the German language Kalium).

  • Nichrom (ニクロム): is the 10th priest of the Patch tribe, in the Anime he first appears in episode 50. Nichrom became the 10th priest after his brother, Chrom the previous 10th priest, was killed by Tao Ren. In the manga, Nichrom oversaw the ambush on team The Ren's team. In the fandom, Nichrom is often mistakenly given the credit of killing Tao Ren. Which is incorrect as he merely watched. He is responsible for Faust VIII (following Chrom's death), Team "Niles", and Team "Tsuki-gumi". His spirit is a scorpion, yellow whip, with his medium being a scorpion's tail. It is revealed, in the new ending of the series, that his Plant was in fact the 7th Plant of the Cave, which also used to be his brothers Plant as well as keeping his brothers spirit ally closely with him which is a locust called purple kick. Yellow whip's oversoul looks like a scorpion with no legs fused into his right arm. The stingers length can also change as well to attack opponents from a distance, but the actual use of yellow whip is to use the scorpion pincers to immobilize the opponents arms while the scorpion's stinger strikes with an attack called "Dreaming needle" that delivers a deadly poison that won't disappear unless the one who created the oversoul dies. The second oversoul called Purple kick looks like a pair of insect designed armored leggings. Said to be the fastest of all ten officiant spirit allies, it can allow the user to move at speeds that even powerful experienced opponents can barely keep track of. It attacks with a powerful leg technique called "Dancing insect".

  • Magna (マグナ, Makuna) is an official of the Patch who takes Nichrome under his wing when the young boy becomes an official. He is the official responsible for the members of Team "Hana-Gumi". He openly supports Hao, and like other officials who do so, takes pleasure in intimidating some of the remaining contestants in the tournament. His spirit is a great horned owl named Magnescope, with his medium being placed on his arms and legs to generate owl wings and owl claws. His plant is the volcano. When the invaders reached his plant, he faced of against Tao Ren and tried to use the volanic gasses to attack unseen like and owl. He was eventually killed by a gigantic lightning strike created by Ren.

  • Radim (ラジム) is the official who is selected to the moderator of the tournament. Unlike most of the other officials, he tries his best to remain neutral, but at times has openly agreed that he doesn't approve of Asakura Hao's shaman only kingdom (going so far as to get Hao's furyoku rating during the fight with X-III). His spirit is an Australian pelican named Platinum Sword, with his medium being his microphone. His plant is the lake. His oversoul looks like a laser blade in which he apparently puts all his mana into allowing him to crush almost any opponent's oversoul with one strike. Also the blade can also split in two acting like a pair of scissors representing how a pelican opens his beak.

  • Namari (ナマリ) is an official who first appeared when Yoh's friends attempted to stop Hao's followers from killing Lady Sati. He apparently had some sort of discontent or rivalry with Ryu, though also seemed to respect him. He was an open supporter of Hao, intimidating some of the remaining contestants in the tournament. Namari's spirit was a cobra named Red Rope(レッドロープ) with his medium (probably) having been snake skin. On their journey to get to the Star Sanctuary, Ryu fought with him first one-on-one in his area: the desert. After killing Ryu, he was in turn killed by Ren with the help of Horo Horo. Before he died he smiled, knowing he'd won by having his boastful opponents use a part of their furyoku to defeat him. This caused Ren to respect him afterwards. He was responsible for all Gandhara shaman. His oversoul looks like the cobra's head has attached itself onto his hand while the rest of the body with its tail passes over his shoulder. With the cobra's head in the lead it allows Namari to move with great speed. He attacks with the cobra's fangs which have poison that can instantly kill an opponent, and the tail can also be used to strike at them. Red rope also has a defensive "Boa form" that wraps around Namari to soften the blows of his opponent.

  • Boron (ブロン, Buron) was the Patch Official responsible of Lyserg Diethel, amongst others, throughout the shaman fight, and was sent to London to test him after the sighting of the destiny star. His spirit is a spider called Bluenet and his mediums are wrist and ankle cuffs made out of spiderhair. When Silva tried to steal the remaining 4 Elemental Spirits and was captured Goldva ordered Renim and Boron to reeducate him in the ways of the Patch, something Kalim seemed shocked to hear. Eventually Hao would be crowned the Shaman King by forfeit of the remaining three teams and his own two teammates. When the remaining teams invaded the Plants and was facing of against Silva Boron showed up alongside Renim and ordered Silva to return to his Plant. There both he and Renim introduced themselves to the invaders and showed off their oversouls, possibly to intimidate them. Eventually the invaders reached his "Plant of the Valley" where he easily defeated them all, until Lyserg Diethel calmed his mind and burned him to death. His oversoul allowed him to attach spider threads throughout the cliffs of the valley allowing him to look like he was flying while standing on them since they were almost invisible as well as to detect the movements of his opponents. The spider looked like it fused onto his arm. The oversoul allowed Boron to creat nets as well as to shoot out the webs almost like a gun, which even allowed him to pierce his opponent's body as such. He can also form his oversoul on his entire body looking like a giant spider with his head replacing the original spider's head.

  • Renim (レニム) is together with Bron responsible for reeducating those who stray from the way of the Patch. When Silva tried to steal the remaining four Elemental Spirits and was captured Goldva ordered Renim and Boron to reeducate him in the ways of the Patch, something Kalim seemed shocked to hear. Eventually Asakura Hao would be crowned the Shaman King by forfeit of the remaining three teams and his own two teammates. When the remaining teams invaded the Plants and was facing of against Silva, Renim showed up alongside Boron and ordered Silva to return to his Plant. There he and Bron revealed their oversouls and greeted the invaders. They left and told them to follow the main path or get lost forever. Renim's spirit is a chameleon named Clear Coat. His plant is the jungle. His oversoul specializes in stealth removing any of his scent sound and presences allowing him to hide perfectly even in plain sight.

  • Talim: A Patch member first seen working in the Patch Cafe, but little else is known about him. It is possible that due to name association he is Kalim's brother. The group of invaders encountered him in the eighth plant, the ocean. He was easily able to defeat the majority of them using his versatile spirit, Green Seeds which has access to the different properties and abilities of every kind of plant on the planet, but was eventually overcome and defeated by Chocolove McDonnell.

  • Rutherford (ラザホー) is a Patch Priest who is only seen at the very end of the manga series, escorting Hao to the King's Shrine. He is a guardian of the Universe Plant and having enormous black eyes on a naked head, he seems like an alien rather than human. His true form was revealed when Yoh's group fought him in his plant and he was in a fact a girl. Her spirit is Gray Saucer, the spirit of an alien which visited the Patch Village more than a thousand years ago and contributed its technology to the tribe, such as the Oracle Bell. The oversoul allowed Rutherford to manipulated the gravity in the plant of the universe for her attacks.

  • Chrom (クロム) was the first and only official to die in the prelinarry rounds of the Shaman Fight. He was killed when he tested Tao Ren. Officially, Ren passed with one hit but when Chrom goaded him a little bit more, he went insane and killed him. Chrom's spirit is a locust, Purple Kick. His medium is probably the armor like plates on his vest. Seeing that his brothers Plant was the 7th Plant of the Cave it was most likely his Plant to protect had he lived so long.

  • Zinc (anime only) : Zinc is a shaman of the Patch tribe who along with Nichrome fights Kalim and Silva when they attempt to help Asakura Yoh. Due to the fact he is in the anime, he doesn't have a plant. Like Nichrome he is given a power boost by Hao yet at the same time he is given 9 other guardian ghosts to make himself a suit of spiritual armor like Silva that can also be combined into Totem Pole Cannon like the Silver Arms. His guardian ghost (most likely the first one he oversouled) is a vulture or buzzard with his medium being the feather plates he wore.

Tao Yúan

  • Tao Yúan (道円 Japanese: Tao En; Chinese Pinyin: Dào Yúan) / Tao En
    • Seiyu: Masashi Ebara, Voice Actor; Marc Thompson
Tao Yúan is the father of Tao Ren (Len Tao in the English anime) and Tao Jun; in the English anime, he is introduced as Len and Jun's uncle. He is a powerful shaman who commands an army of jiang-shi.
Appearing as a giant man who is both sadistic and malevolent, Yúan is first seen during the flash back sequences of Ren and Lee Pai-Long, both times in shadow. His first true appearance is in volume 7, when Ren and Yoh Asakura fight for the last spot in the Shaman Fight. Because of Yuan, both Ren and Jun had extremely painful childhoods, as they were exposed to bloodshed and death on a daily basis, as well as severe physical abuse. When Jun questions his actions relating to Ren, also asking him to set Ren free, he laughs and proceeds to "punish" her by sealing her in a dungeon for the ten days it takes Ren to return home after his fight with Yoh.
To meet Ren, Yúan creates an army of Jiang Shi from freshly killed corpses which Ren disposes of with little difficulty. When Ren and Yúan face off Ren cannot wound his father even with the Golden Vorpal Dance. He then proceeds to punish (aka torture) Ren and locked him in the dungeon with his sister. His friends eventually arrive; with their combined efforts, Yúan is literally torn to pieces. At the verge of defeat, Yúan's concentration breaks and it is revealed that his appearance is an illusion created by his Oversoul - he actually appears as an older greatly mustachioed looking man very similar to Ren. He reveals the source his obsession with the family doctrine is because he must bear the weight of two thousand years of Tao family souls (in a type of mortuary tablet armor) and reveals his second Over soul, an oriental dragon with a head similar to his first Oversoul. Ren defeats his father and they have a small moment of revelation as Yuan passes him the Thunder Sword (Houraiken). Afterwards, he is shown much as a much more enthusiastic father, such as coming to the Patch Village and cheering Ren on during his team's match (much to his son's embarrassment).
