Encyclopedia
Pirates of the Caribbean Online is an MMORPG created by The Walt Disney Company, based on the film series and theme park attraction of the same name. The game is the second MMORPG developed by the VR Studio section of the Walt Disney Internet Group, after Toontown Online (which launched in 2003).
The game was first announced by The Walt Disney Company on April 26, 2005. It was originally scheduled to be released in summer 2006, to coincide with the release of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, but its release was pushed back multiple times. The game went through two beta testing phases during 2007 and was officially launched on October 31, 2007.
The game software is free to download and play, though the version available to players with "Basic Access" runs only in a windowed, advertisement-supported window. By paying a monthly fee, players can gain "Unlimited Access", which allows full-screen play and character advancement beyond the limits of "Basic Access".
The game is officially available to players in the United States, United Kingdom (basic access only), parts of Mexico, and Canada. Disney also will announce this online game to be distributed in southeast Asia by AsiaSoft in 2009.
Although Pirates Online and all other Disney online products are closely watched by game moderators, bypassing the filter is a very frequent and fairly easy violation that occurs. Extreme foul language, violence and graphic, disturbing cybersex are rampant in the game and it is strongly recommended that parents stay with their children at all times when they are on this site.
Gameplay
Key features of the game include the ability to create pirates, own and sail ships in combat, and complete quests for gold coins, which are the game's currency, gain notoriety (the game's experience system), and use unique weapons and treasure items.
There are various weapons to learn, and various skills to master in the game for each weapon. Currently, character leveling tops out at level 40, and skills max out at level 25, so only a fixed number of skill points (26) can be assigned to the skills in game. By paying in-game gold, skill points for different weapons can be reassigned, after paying a gold coin fee to a trainer in any blacksmith's shop.
In-game combat is basic, and consists of pressing some numbers on the keyboard, and clicking the mouse. The game has a limited list of weapons available—sword, pistol, voodoo doll, dagger (and throwing knives), grenades, and voodoo staff—with each upgradeable up to four times.
Players can play Tortuga hold 'em and blackjack in taverns, with the ability to bet gold on each game. These games can be played against NPCs or other online players. Currently the maximum amount of gold that can be carried is 500,000.
Reception
Pirates of the Caribbean Online has received middling reviews. Reviewers generally noted the game's family-friendly atmosphere, relatively simple graphics, and interesting ship combat.
