. He acquired his knowledge of roses when working with his father Jean Lambert in his nursery "Lambert & Reiter", which he had started in 1869 with his brother. Peter trained at a Prussian school of horticulture and gained experience working in nurseries in France and England. He began his own successful nursery at Trier. He is the first rosarian to grow a long-flowering bush rose cultivar named Trier, which was later crossed with a tea-rose.

In 1900 he married Leoni Lamesch to whom he had dedicated one of his cultivars in which he had mixed Polyanthas with Noisettes.
