Timeline

500 BC   Foundation of first republic in Vaishali Bihar India.

1527   Florentines drive out the Medici for a second time and Florence re-establishes a republic.

1650   William III of Orange becomes Prince of the House of Orange the moment of his birth, succeeding his father who had died a few days earlier. He doesn't become stadtholder, so the United Provinces become a true republic.

1804   End of French rule in Haiti. Haiti gains independence from France and becomes the first black republic and have the only successful slave revolt ever.

1810   ''Dieciséis de septiembre'', the Mexican War of Independence of the Republic of Mexico.

1825   Bolivia gains independence from Peru as a republic with the instigation of Simón Bolívar.

1918   November 9 — Provisional National Council Minister-President Kurt Eisner declares Bavaria to be a republic.

1918   November 12 — Austria becomes a republic.

1918   November 14 — Czechoslovakia becomes a republic.

1923   Turkey becomes a republic following the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire

1924   Greece proclaims it is a republic.

1924   Albania becomes a republic.

1926   Lebanon becomes a republic.

1946   Kingdom of Hungary becomes a republic.

1946   In a referendum Italians decide to turn Italy from a monarchy into a Republic. After this referendum, the king of Italy Umberto II di Savoia was exiled. Women vote for the first time.

1946   Italy declared republic

1950   India promulgates its constitution forming a republic and Rajendra Prasad is sworn in as its first president.

1953   Egypt declares a republic

1956   Pakistan becomes the first Islamic republic and a National holiday is observed in the country included the former East Pakistan state.

1968   A second republic is declared in the Maldives.

1970   Rhodesia severs its last tie with the United Kingdom, declaring itself a racially-segregated republic.

1971   Sierra Leone becomes a republic.

1973   The Greek military junta abolishes the monarchy and proclaims a republic.

1976   The Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago becomes a republic, replacing Queen Elizabeth II with an elected president as their Head of State.

1992   Mauritius becomes a republic while remaining a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
