History

Before the Plantation of Ulster

 and enclosed the demesne by 1629. On his death, the estate passed to his son, William, Bishop of Clonfert.

The castle was destroyed by fire in 1918 and little remains of it.

Buildings of note

  • 1795 1st Bailieborough Presbyterian Church was built at Corglass. A congregation had been formed there as far back as 1714.
  • 1817 The courthouse was erected with the addition of the Bridewell Jail in 1833.
  • 1818 The Market House is now the town's library. It is wheelchair accessible and hosts many events like art exhibitions, book and poetry readings etc.
  • 1833 The Wesleyan Chapel was the meeting place of Methodists in the area. It is now a privately owned Arts and Cultural Centre.
  • 1833 The Parish Church (Church of Ireland) was erected between 1833 and 1835, it replaced an older Church now in ruins.
  • 1839 The Roman Catholic Church replaced an older Church described as a long thatched Chapel built in the late 18th century. The tower and belfry were added between 1868-70. The marble alter is dated 24th Dec. 1895. The stations of the cross were painted by the renowned Irish Artist George Collie in 1956.
  • 1839 The Union Workhouse was erected between 1839 and 1845. A fever hospital was added later.
  • 1847 The Model House was built as an Agricultural Training School it had a 48 acres (194,249.3 m²) farm attached.
  • 1848 The Model Schools, the building of which was funded by Sir John Young.

The town is well known for the many public houses that line the main street many serving food as well as beverages.
