The 13 stars represent the 13 original colonies, the three star grouping at the top portray the three Departments of the National Defense Establishment (Army, Navy, and Air Force). The crest includes the American bald eagle, the cloud formation depicts the creation of a new firmament, and the wreath, composed of six alternate folds of silver and blue, incorporate the colors of the basic shield design. The Indoor/Parade version is bordered by a gold fringe while the Outdoor version is plain.

Streamers

Verified combat credit entitles an organization to the appropriate campaign streamer
Campaign streamer
Campaign streamers are decorations attached to military flags to recognize particular achievements or events of a military unit or service. Attached to the headpiece of the assigned flag, the streamer often is an inscribed ribbon with the name and date denoting participation in a particular battle,...

s representing the named campaign in which it participated. The campaign streamer will be embroidered with the name and years of the campaign. Non-combat service is represented by a organizational service streamer, which is not embroidered.

Streamers are also used to represent all unit citations a specific unit has received. Those awarded by a foreign government will be last in precedence.
