. An Airman Basic is typically promoted to Airman after six months of Active Duty service, or immediately after Basic Training if the trainee had 2 years of JROTC, or 20 college credit hours. Those personnel who qualify for these advanced promotions wear the rank insignia during the basic training graduation ceremony. They also receive retroactive pay for the advanced pay grade upon completion of basic training. An Airman's duties include adjusting to military life and becoming proficient in their Air Force specialty. Because of their lone stripe, an Airman is often nicknamed "Mosquito Wings," "Speed bump," "Bullet Sponge," "Wingnut," or simply "One-Striper."
