. He was the grandson of Timothy Horsfield, Sr., a colonel and justice of the peace in Bethlehem, and a friend mentioned in Benjamin Franklin's autobiography. The Horsfield family had converted to Moravianism, a Protestant denomination with a strong emphasis on education.
