in support of the act's eighth studio album, Songs of Faith and Devotion
, which was released in March 1993. The tour is an extension of the Devotional Tour
in 1993, which reached Europe and North America.
The jaunt saw the band visit territories which they had never performed in or had not toured in for some time, hence the title "Exotic Tour". The group reached Africa, Asia, Oceania, and South America. The band also played the U.S.
state of Hawaii, Costa Rica
, and Mexico
. The tour commenced in Johannesburg

In May 1994, the act began a tour of the U.S. and Canada
entitled "Summer Tour, '94". This was the second leg of North American shows promoting Songs of Faith and Devotion and took place mostly in outdoor venues and amphitheatres.
The tour marked a tumultuous time for the group, with keyboardist Andrew Fletcher
taking leave from touring duties after two months due to "mental instability" and lead singer Dave Gahan's continuing issues with drug addiction. Fletcher was replaced by Daryl Bamonte
on all dates from April. This is the last ever tour with Alan Wilder
as a member of Depeche Mode.
