History

During the fall of 2002 developers met with other founding partners to discuss the potential merits of a small healthcare high school for Sacramento. Sacramento was experiencing an extreme shortage of new, qualified healthcare workers and the Sacramento City Unified School District was in the process of developing a network of small, focused high schools.

process was initiated. Since that time, the concept has been researched and refined to its present form. Much attention was placed on existing healthcare high school programs that work – in addition to data on students who are successful in collegiate programs.  was completed.

Culture

AABHPHS is separate from other high schools in that its culture is vastly different. Students from freshmen year onwards are encouraged to work together whether friend or foe. This works together with an overall theme of professionalism to convey a core lesson :

"Sometimes you end up working with people you just don't like and you just have to get over that." - A faculty member in the Literature Department

The school also has a zero tolerance for violence. Whether a student started the fight or didn't respond to the initiator, involved parties are both immediately expelled. This dramatically reduces the amount of conflicts and terminates the usual escalations of confrontations like these.

Another factor on this unique culture is the small amount of enrolled students which contributes to more communication between grades. Club utilize this to get more and more students involved and make them feel wanted.

Finally, the relentless dedication of staff in and out of the classroom ties the students and faculty together. Most faculty will stay in their rooms during lunch time to help students or give them a place to eat lunch and socialize. Many of the faculty will also stay after school at least an hour or two for the benefit of students.
