The 1988 Tooheys 1000 was the 29th running of the Bathurst 1000
touring car
race. It was held on 2 October 1988 at the Mount Panorama Circuit
just outside Bathurst
. The race was also part of a short lived South Pacific Touring Car Championship in 1988.

In the days prior to the race there was controversy as Tom Walkinshaw
lodged a formal protest against the leading Australia's Sierra's (all three DJR cars along with the Longhurst and Bond Sierra's). Curiously all European built Fords were not protested, Walkinshaw claiming it was only the Australian cars as they were the fastest, despite the presence of the Eggenberger built Allan Moffat Racing
Sierra as 4th fastest qualifier. This was countered by the Dick Johnson team who protested the HSV
team Commodore's. Ultimately the Walkinshaw protest was dismissed as it was found his protest was illegal as the HSV Team was entered by Larry Perkins
and not Walkinshaw, the Scot had no authority to lodge a protest and the stewards of the meeting erred in allowing it to proceed. However, the damage was done to the leading Aussie Fords and it was only race winners Tony Longhurst Racing
who managed to get their car back up to speed after being dismantled by scrutineers on the Friday before the Top 10 run off. In an ironic twist, the DJR protest against the three HSV team cars was successful, though not needed as one car was withdrawn before the race and both the Walkinshaw/Jeff Allam
and the Perkins/Denny Hulme
/Walkinshaw cars failed to finish.
The 1988 race, under the first time sponsorship of Tooheys Brewery, was won by Tony Longhurst
and Tomas Mezera
driving a Ford Sierra RS500. It was the races first victory for a turbocharged
vehicle, and the first victory by a four cylinder car since 1966
. It was also the only time in the races history that the race had a rolling rather than a standing start as dictated by FISA regulations. The Ford Sierras dominated the race as expected but reliability had plagued the Fords. Several that had led the race retired however sufficient of them finished to fill the podium positions. Second was the last survivor of the three car Dick Johnson Racing
team, driven by former factory Toyota racer John Smith and DJR lead drivers Dick Johnson and John Bowe
who's own cars had both failed early. Alfredo Costanzo
qualified in the DJR Sierra but did not get to race as Johnson and Bowe took over the Smith/Costanzo car. Third was the Sierra of Colin Bond
and Alan Jones. The Caltex
Sierra of Bond/Jones had to survive a protest and post race disqualification (later overruled) to be finally classified 3rd in December '88.
