Gameplay

Gameplay in Taiko DS is very similar to its predecessors. In arcade versions of the series, players are tasked to strike a drum controller to the accompanied music, ranging from J-pop
J-pop

s and original songs produced by Namco, according to on-screen cues. Since there is not a drum peripheral available for the DS, the touch screen is used instead, displaying a drum on screen, where players use styli to simulate these actions; the DS' buttons can be used as well. A note bar is shown on the game screen, where red or blue, small or large notes approach a strike point, where the player hits the drum either on the center or the outer rims with either one or both drumsticks, respectively. (For instance, a note sequence of small red, small red, large blue would be played with two strikes to the center (drum) part, followed by striking the outer rim of the drum on both sides simultaneously.)

Other "special" notes include yellow "hold" notes, where players perform a rapid drumroll during the length of the note; balloon notes, where "red" must be drumrolled rapidly until a counter depletes to 0; and tambourine notes, known as a "Den-den" note, alternating red and blue strikes until a counter reaches 0. Failing to interact with "special" notes do not count as misses.

Clearing a song involves hitting enough notes correctly to fill your "norma" (quota) bar to a certain point. Like most music games, gameplay emphasizes skill, with a scoring system that relies on the player's ability to accumulate a high combo. The number in one's combo acts as a score multiplier to some degree; once a certain combo is reached, the value of individual notes increases, and when the combo is lost, their value returns to base. As such, scoring well relies heavily on achieving a "full combo" on any given song.

A training mode, , involves playing increasingly difficult songs to gain ranks and titles. Players can only "challenge" a song once per day, though an option to practice indefinitely beforehand is given.

A large amount of content is available to be unlocked, including a wardrobe of costumes for the mascot drum, numerous options to change the sounds of the notes played by the drum, and speed modifiers, most of which is acquired either through mail messages or in the story mode.

Taiko DS 3 supports the DS Download Play feature, allowing those without the Game Card to join a multiplayer game.

Yokai Daikessen mode

Taiko DS 3 introduces a new story mode, mode, which sets the theme of the game's title. This mode introduces new overhead gameplay mechanics similar to a traditional JRPG, with players taking the role of the main protagonist of Taiko, Don. Players interact with NPCs

, and face boss enemies who will challenge the player with difficult songs and various on-screen distractions, such as bomb notes and objects blocking view of the note bar. Unlocked or purchased costumes and sound effects serve as armor and weapons by boosting defense and attack.

The story is set in classical Japan, with Don being sucked backward in time, landing in Iga Village
