West was born in Olongapo, Philippines

 where his father was in the armed forces. He attended kindergarten and first grade there and then moved to the States with his parents when he was 6-years-old.

A few years after arriving in America, Ed became involved in martial arts

 when he was 9-years-old. He was inspired by watching Jean Claude Van Damme movies and practiced styles like karate
