California InterContinental University was first approved to operate as a degree granting university in the state of California in 2005 by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education

The letter ensured that the university would continue to uphold all student consumer protection provisions and to remain in full compliance with the state of California law as it existed on the date of the sunset of the legislation.

In 2009, CalUniversity was accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). The Accrediting Commission of DETC is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency and it is also a recognized member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation [CHEA]. Dr. Kumar and Dr. Finian Tan, together as founder and co-chairman and co-founder and chairman of the University respectively, have been steering and funding its growth jointly through their respective companies iGlobal Group and Vickers Financial Group. It has been their passion to build a truly global University.

After receiving DETC accreditation in January 2009, the university changed its name to better reflect its global scope and outreach to the California InterContinental University; however, its trade name of "CalUniversity" remains in use.
