 and 1758 ft. above sea-level, and around 180 km northeast of state capital, Bhopal. Its original name 'Saugor' is amalgation of two words namely 'SAU' meaning 100 and 'GARH' meaning forts, as there were countless small-forts in this region. With time the name has changed from 'Saugor' to 'Sagar'.

 is the official language of the city, while Bundelkhandi is the local dialect. Sagar is well known for its contribution to Hindi literature, and hosts a number of writers, poets and other leading artists in their respective fields.

The region is popular on India's tourism scene, due to its cultural heritage and diversity. Some places of interest in and around Sagar are Rahatgarh Waterfalls, Garhphra Mountains and Temples, and Khimlasa Forts. Sagar is developing into an industrial area with many new corporate industries setting up their plants within the city. Sagar has an army cantonment unit. The city known as the Heart of Madhya Pradesh has a very good transportation network with the railway system and national highways connecting it with all major cities across India. The nearest airport from the city is at Bhopal, the capital of the state of M.P.

Sagar region is served by various media networks. Regional commercial television networks such as Doordarshan (DD)operate in and around the city. The region also receives local radio networks and is home to various daily newspapers such as Dainik Bhaskar, Dainik Jaagran. The health care services in Sagar are dependent mainly on government hospital. After opening of Govt. medical college people are getting better medical facilities. The college is in infantile stage and yet dependent on age old district hospital. The college hospital is under construction. at present as by end of 2011 only OPD of the college hospital is functioning. The modern healthcare facilities are not much advanced in the town. Tertiary healthcare services are not available at all even after opening of Medical College. There are small sporadic nursing homes in Sagar. The private set up of hospitals was at times (1991) was initiated by devotion of DR Anil Khare and Dr Mrs C K Khare through a limited company. The hospital named Lokpriya hospital was inaugurated by Mr Sunil Dutt in september 19, 1991. The hospital continued for 10 years when it landed into a dispute between owners and MPFC. Resultantly it was closed in 2001. Thereafter none dared to take major step for private healthcare set up.

Sagar holds a large part of the city to the Army with Military battalions like MRC etc. being its part.

 which is about 12 km from Sagar and is one of the best aviation training institutions present in the country. Sagar also has a centre of Aptech, India's leading IT education training company located at Civil Lines.
Sagar is also importnant for the biodiversity it harbours. The small forests around Sagar university are home of varied flora and fauna. Snakes, in particular, find ideal habitat here.
Dr. Hari Singh Gour university has now become a central university.The University has an excellent campus with a huge library.The dept of Forensic Science and Pharmceutical Sciences are the leading ones.

Transport

Railways


The Sagar Railway Station (Station Code: SGO) is the main railway station of the city which serves a few trains for Delhi, Bombay and Calcutta. While it serves trains for Bhopal, Indore and Jabalpur too. The Sagar Railway Station lies between the two major rail stations linking northern India to South and Central India.
These are the Katni and Bina Railway Stations. The Bina Railway Station falls on Delhi-Bhopal Rail Route, while Katni is on the Allahabad-Itarasi rail route. Bina falls under the Sagar District and is just 1 hour distance from Sagar Town. So, by reaching Bina you can easily get trains for Delhi, Gwalior, Agra, Mathura, Jammu, Amritsar, Mumbai, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chennai, Goa, Hydrabad and other South and north Indian cities. Katni is quiet a distance from Sagar. There are a pair of passenger trains running between Katni and Bina but they are few and are not always precise to scheduled time.

The way to Jhansi from Sagar is being newly built and it a treat to the drivers for driving on that massive highway. It takes just a day to reach New Delhi from Sagar.The route is Sagar-Lalitpur-Jhansi-Gwalior-Agra-Mathura-Faridabad-New Delhi.However, it is a night halt is advisable at Gwalior.From Sagar, one can visit Bhopal, Sanchi stupa, Khajuraho, Kanha forest at ease by vehicle either self-driven or by a driver.The Sagar city is a small place so travelling from one place to the other doesnt take much time.Autos are there, but frequented by scooty and bikes and four wheelers as well.
Long distance buses are available from Sagar to Bhopal, Jhansi, Damoh, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Banda.

Airways

Nearest airports with regular domestic flights are at Jabalpur, Bhopal. Khajuraho another airport is an international air port. Each of these airports are nearly 180–200 km from Sagar. It takes 3–5 hours by road to these airports. There is also a air-strip at Dhana(15Km) which has been proposed to be expanded.

Entertainment spots

Sagar is full of entertainment. Everyday you wake up here, you will find a new sort of entertainment. Some cool place to visit here are the Parks. One is located near the bus stop in front of Govt. Girls College. The lake on the side of lakha banzaara lake is more beautiful as it provides the full view of the great lake and the hills behind it. There are also some parks at the Civil Lines. The city is full of Mosques and Temples (Hindu and Jain). The Jaama Masjid at the Katra Square and the Hanumaan Temple near the Kachhahari. There is also a great temple at Macronia. The city also have a Stadium, A Sports Complex( not that modern) and even a Mall at Cantonment.
Some famous Cinema halls are the Alankaar Talkies, The Cine City and The Manohar Talkies. They play latest bollywood movie at a rate affordable to a common man. The market is very developed, however it is not as big, but it is organised. The lights of the city can be seen in the night as the market provides a magnefecient view.
If you are visiting Sagar, don't forget to taste the famous Mangauri. The tea shop at the radha market, near railway station, offers you a great taste of tea. However, exploring the city on foot is difficult and tiring as the whole city is on hills, but if you want to have the maximum here, it is recommended.

Behavior of people

The evening in Civil Lines is crowded by the foot stalls selling Mangoris, Samosas, chats, Gol gappas,Kachori with a yummy chutney. People usually have a culture of having a plate full of mangoris. In summers temporary fresh fruit juice stalls are also set up coupled with roadside sugarcane juice trolleys, the small glasses costs around Rs 5 while the bigger ones are 10. The most famous Bakery is Kanha Bakers, Makroniya.Varun Smriti Udyaan is a very nice greenary park, a place for eco-outing.Civil Lines market tends to be a little expensive while the same things in Katra market is quite cheaper.The Cine City is a new movie hall, in Makroniya with all the modern amenities but no where in this town would one find a movie hall where english movies are shown.Cantonment Shopping Mall has come up in Civil Lines which is proposed to be a good shopping centre.Sagar has an excellent market of Gold, Silver and other precious stones in Bada Bazar, Katra.Lentils and vegetables are cheaper here while the electronic stuffs are little expensive. The biggest wholesale vegetable market is Sabzi Mandi located near Katra.Good Scientific shops exists at Sagar. This is mainly a vegetarian town with lot of good restaurants cooking vegetarian food. The most famous ones are Hotel Deepali, Hotel Paradise,Happinezz, Hotel Kanchi, Hotel Vardaan, Majestic Plaza (offering take away service only), but Hotel Deepak (civil lines),Vandana (Katra)and Khana Khazana (near MES IB) offers non-veg as well.
