Known as Newman College of Higher Education until January 2008, it has the highest employment of graduates rate of UK universities and is in the top 25% of UK universities for teaching quality, academic support, personal development and assessment and feedback in the 2007 National Student Survey. In September 2007, it was given the right to award its own degrees

. NSU's task is to ensure that students' rights and needs are considered when changes are planned to the education system, be it within Newman or on a national level.

NSU has other activities in which students can become involved: supporting student groups such as sports teams and societies, various committees, the Executive Committee, student course representatives, supporting the on-site bar and organising social events. NSU also runs the Student Information and Advice Centre (SIAC) which is staffed by volunteer students who act as a signpost to help others with a variety of concerns.

Student Union Executive

The constitution of Newman Student Union requires that it be run by democratically elected officers who serve a one year term beginning on July 1. NSU also offers officers specific training to ensure they gain extra-curricular skills and experience through their time at Newman in order to better prepare for the work-place.
