MJB relies heavily on participatory democracy in its task planning process, while also encouraging the development of leadership skills and expansion of knowledge through a skills building and political education program that addresses the root causes of both inequality and injustice.
Growth and Action Taken
Over the past couple of years, MJB has had a significant growth in its member population. It now has 440 members. It has also launched media tours, protests, court actions, and direct actions against landlords, mortgage lenders, and city institutions in an effort to challenge the unjust housing practices in El Barrio. MJB members decided to adhere to the Zapatista’s Sixth Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle, joining the Other Campaign. MJB continues to be led by residents of East Harlem who come together and organize tenant associations to fight neoliberal gentrification.
