Motkur or Mothkur is located at 17.4500°N 79.2667°E. It has an average elevation of 292 metres (961 ft).

. It is a mandal headquarters and a former taluk. The present Thungathurty MLA Mothkupally Narsimhulu TDP and this was under Ramannapet constituency earlier. The MLA was Vuppunuthala Purushottam Reddy, he was telangana planning and development board chairman.

It is a regional trade centre for the three mandals of Mothkur, Atmakur and Gundala. It is located on the banks of Bikkeru a tributary of Musi River which itself is a tributary of river Krishna

. Roads are the only mode of transport to this town. There are many shops and grocery stores that cater the needs of the people who live in villages surrounding Mothkur.

The town consists of Old Mothkur and New Mothkur. New Mothkur is also called as Pothaigadda. Old Mothkur is also called as the Old bus stand area. New Mothkur is well planned and has many residential colonies like the Drivers Colony, Padmashaali Colony, Teachers Colony, Lourdu Nagar, Venkateswara Colony and Sundarayya Colony. The town has a lake on which there is a road towards Tirumalagiri. Most of the government offices are situated after the crossing with the lake.

Mothkur has great legacy. The Prominent "Kalvala (warrior class)" family members have been living in Mothkur and abroad for about 6 generations. Late Shri Kalvala Narahari Rao (1891–1942) was Mali Patel, great Philanthropist, and a landed gentry. Late Shri Kalvala Prabhakar Rao, Member of Parliament(1986–1992).

The town has the Ramalingeshwara temple belonging to medieval India (probably Kakatiyas),Peddamma Temple a newly constructed one near new bus stand,SaiBaba temple at potaigadda Sainagar (Under Construction), a mosque and a missionary run chapel. Every year at Ramalingeshwara swamy temple a local festival called "Agni Gundalu (అగ్ని గుండాలు )" is conducted after the Famous Hindu festival HOLI . Many people attend for this local festival from nearby villages.

Weekend Market (అంగడి ):
Every Sunday there will be a local weekend Market (called "అంగడి" in Local Language Telugu) is conducted. This market is famous for sale of Animals used for agriculture, vegetables, clothes and common groceries. This is one of the biggest local market in the 3 mandals of mothur, gundala and athmakur.This town has one cinema theatre(VENKATESHWARA THEATRE).

Festivals

Festivals such as "DASARA", "Ugaadi"(Telugu New Year Day)& "Bonalu" are celebrated with great enthusiasm. These festivals are celebrated in community like manner means, all the town residents gather at "Late Sri Kalvala Narahari Rao's House", currently, it's termed as Hari Hara Bhakta Mandali to perform Betala pooja, & AAYUDHA POOJA (by one of the Kalvala family members) then proceed to "Jammi" chettu. After performing pooja there, all people greet each other with "Jammi-aaku". All residents then convene at Kalvala's house in the evening of UGADI( Tejugu new year's day) to check the individual astrological forecast for the impending year. "Bonalu" tradition/festival in Mothkur was first introduced by late Shri Kalvala Narahari Rao in mid 1930's, these festivals are synonym of community harmony.
