Historical development

The site was founded in 1885 for a station for the Houston, East and West Texas Railway. The land was donated by Benjamin Franklin Morris, and the site was named for his grandson Joaquin. The post office was opened in the following year. The site operated as a shipping point for cotton

Pickerton Lumber Legend

Joaquin was once a booming town in the 1930s and 1940s. A company named Pickerton Lumber was a huge success until the owner of the mill William H. Pickerton discovered that his daughter was in love with a black mill employee. Pickerton hanged them both and subsequently went to trial; he was acquitted of all charges. He returned to the town to shut down the mill, and then moved to southern Louisiana
