A new discipline is introduced in the 2001 world championship: bouldering. In 2007, the independent IFSC is created as a continuation of the ICC to govern Competition Climbing.

After the 2011 world championship an intermediate world championship is created in 2012 to avoid interference with the 2013 World Games
