Origin of the name

Giddarbaha in its earliest stage was known as 'Pepali', named after the old tree 'pipal'. Giddarbaha, means Pepali of that time, was a small village. It was very happy and small village with limited number of people. When Shri Guru Gobind Singh

ji visited Pepali, they saw ladies of the village disturbed by the 'giddar' when they went to fetch water from the well. When Guru ji saw this, he inquired about the problem to which the villagers replied that everybody in this village is married except him (giddar). After knowing the problem, Guruji arranged the marriage of giddar. From there that village was renamed by the locals as 'Giddar vivaha'.

Before the Raj

Giddar vivaha then became the market for the nearby mandis of the region to sell agricultural product, traders used to come here to sell and purchase the products and go back, but some traders stayed and made it their home and built shops and houses, which increased the population of the village and took the shape of market, by which many other people from nearby villages and region were attracted and came there, now the village Giddar vivaha (pepali) had became town.

In the British raj

When the British reached the town, they were unable to pronounce the name "Giddar vivah" properly so they called it Giddarbaha. In 1909 they designed a planned town, this new city is fully walled which consists of six gates among which city gate and clock house was important ones, city was beautiful with the broad ways which are well connected with other cities like bathinda, chandigarh, amritsar, muktsar, dabawali, sirsa, delhi, faridkot, abohar, fazilka, ganganagar, malout, sangat, ramma, etc. They renamed it as 'Giddarbaha city' and this new name was written on the stones by the British at the gates of the new planned city. They built a church too on the sangat road (near doula). Goushalla and Durga mandir was the earliest temples built in the city.
In 1917, the British government established the BathindaKarachi

There is wide seasonal temperature variation in Giddarbaha area. In summer the temperature reaches as high as 48-50°C and in winters as low as 1-2°C. The Western Himalayas in the north and the Thar Desert in the south and southwest mainly determine the climate conditions. The major part of the district qualifies for aridic (tropic) moisture regime according to the criteria laid down in soil taxonomy. Soil moisture regime computations employing the Newhall mathematical model indicate that the area has a 'weak aridic' moisture regime (Van Wambeke, 1985).
