Dharmavaram is a taluk of Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh. It has 48 villages over an area of 632 square miles. The population in 1901 was 70,943, compared with 65,629 in 1891. Dharmavaram town has a population of 10,658. It was a Railway junction of the Guntakal-Bangalore branch of the Southern Mahratta Railway with the Villupuram-Dharmavaram branch of the South Indian Railway. The city was said to be founded by Kriyasakti Udaiyar, who built a fort on the banks of large reservoir formed by damming the Chitravati river.

Factionism has been a major concern here for the past few decades, with violent incidents being reported occasionally.
