History

It was established in 1955 by Dr. Shivram and Dr. Mekhri in what was then the fort police station ground. The college was initially run by the Mysore Medical Education Society and was later handed over to the Government of Karnataka

. It was built by civil engineer & architect, Mr. V. Ramamoorthy, who built it in a record time of 6 months.
From its inception, the college has been associated with some of the most eminent doctors in India. It has become the most coveted destination for medical aspirants in the state of Karnataka to study medicine and has been consistently ranked among the top fifteen medical colleges in India

It celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2005-2006 with major renovation and the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Digital Library and Basavarajendra Auditorium. In 2006, the college was granted the prestigious Autonomous status by the Government of Karnataka. The college is presently undergoing major renovation along the lines of AIIMS

Upgrade of the Institute to the level of AIIMS

Work on upgrade of the college to the level of AIIMS started in March 2007. Under the 1.2 billion Rupees centrally funded project upgrade work is taking place in the college as well as all the affiliated hospitals. The proposed upgrades include
  • A superspeciality block and nursing college in the Victoria Hospital campus
  • A casualty and trauma centre in Victoria Hospital
  • Two tower blocks on the Centenary building and a New Outpatient block in Victoria Hospital
  • A geriatrics unit to be set up at the cost of 40 million rupees
  • Upgrade of the psychiatry department at the cost of 3.5 million rupees
  • A new Regional Institute of Paramedical Sciences to be set up in the SDS T.B sanitorium campus
  • A super-speciality block in Minto Hospital housing six super-specialties of neurology, neuro surgery, plastic surgery, surgical gastroenterology, paediatric surgery and cardiology.
  • State of the art equipment for all affiliated hospitals
