The Asian Cultural Council was established in 1980 to carry forward the mission of the Asian Cultural Program of the JDR 3rd Fund, which was created by

. As of 2010, the Council and the JDR 3rd Fund before it have provided grant assistance to nearly 6,000 Asians and American artists, scholars, and specialists in the arts. It currently makes approximately 160 grants a year, and its annual budget is met by a combination of endowment income and contributions from foundations, corporations, and individual donors.

in the United States, and similarly, to American applicants who wish to work in the art sector in Asia. Every year the ACC also supports a small number of projects involving inter-Asia exchange. In addition, grants are awarded to various educational and cultural institutions in Asia and the United States to promote Asian-American cultural exchange.
