It was established by the West Bengal Government as a teaching and affiliating university on 15 June, 1960 with six graduate departments and thirty undergraduate colleges spread over five districts that come under the jurisdiction of the university.  took the initiative of establishing an University at the premises of the palace of the maharaja of Burdwan. Thus the University was established in 1960. Sukumar Sen (ICS) was the first Vice-Chancellor of the University. The University then began it's function only with the humanities

Admission

Due to its good reputation in educational scenario of West Bengal, students and research scholars are keen on receiving admission in this institute for under graduate, post graduate and research programs. For under graduate and post graduate level admission students have to keep a close watch over the admission notification of this university which comes out after publication of higher secondary (10+2) and graduation (10+2+3) level results, respectively.

For research level programs, the aspirants have to sit for a qualifying test followed by an interview. It is also mandatory that they have to secure at least 55% marks in their post graduate level examination.
