The event was established in 1957, and it was originally called the Aral-Pokal. In the early part of its history it was held at Gelsenkirchen

, and the first three runnings were contested over 2,600 metres. The European race-grading system started to include German events in 1972, and the Aral-Pokal was classed at Group 2 level. It was promoted to Group 1 status in 1973.

From 1998 to 2000 the race was known as the "Grosser Erdgas-Preis". It was transferred to Cologne in 2001, where it was initially titled the "Credit-Suisse Private Banking Pokal". This was changed to the present name in 2004.
