Demographics

Puttur is the one of fastest developing town & Peacefull town in Andhra Pradesh.

As per Census 2001, Puttur has a population of around 30000 (Reference : Census of India). In Puttur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. Once upon a time it was in Tamil Nadu. Later it was clubbed into Andhra Pradesh. Majority of the population speaks Telugu.Tamil is also widely spoken in Puttur by which people who have native place traditionally. The main occupation of the tamil people is hanloom weaving in olden days but now powerloom weaving. The dhotis, cheeras(seelai),Lungis and sudidhar materials are manufaturing.

The world famous Natural Bone Setting Hospital is located close to Puttur. From ancient days, broken bones are set by herbal leaves without operation, as it is one of the oldest procedure which gained popularity across the world. Though called Puttur Bone Setters, this hospital is actually located in Rachapalyam, a village near puttur. A family of kshatriyas discovered this unique procedure, and their descendants are still responsible for the management of this hospital.

The first Railway Track in Andhra Pradesh was built between Puttur and Renigunta.

While laying the railway track, Tamil workers called this place "PUDHU OORU" which means "NEW PLACE". In due course of time, this name was changed to "PUTTURU" by the Telugu people in and around this place.

Puttur is famous for Rathnam Betel-nut Powder. It is also famous for Mangoes. From here Mangoes are exported to Chennai, Mumbai and various parts of India.

Festivals in Puttur

The local festival called "Thirunallu" is celebrated in the month of August every year for 3 days. The whole town of Puttur will wear a festive look during the festival. "Radhotsavam" (Pulling a Car(Theru)) is most important part of Thirunallu. The huge car decorated with flowers and containing a statue of a god is pulled through the main streets of Puttur. Also, a small exhibition and shandy takes place on those days, entertaining the people. In the shandy, people can be seen buying small toys, decoration items, cosmetics, and home appliances. There are also fun-rides available and the whole place looks like a carnival. One of the cool things selling at the "Thirunallu" are tiny little colored baby chickens. They come in varied colors such as pink, green, orange, yellow, and blue.

The local festival for Gate Puttur actually East side of the railway track is "Jatra" specially for Govindhamman upto 3days in July end recently from 2004 onwards.The festival will starts with the "saattu" program on sunday and the god of GIvindhamman will be decorated and seated on car which is pulled by the pepoles all over the entire gate puttur area on Tuesday 9 (i.e.next to sunday programme)and finally the program ends on Wednesday with the "Kumbam Idudhal" programe means all the ladies in the town are brings prasadam which is prepared at their home and submitted in front of the god.

The other local funtion if AADI KRITHAGA. All are take kavadis praised the god MURUGA and submitted it to the GOD Muruga at puttur alone or at Tiritani.
