Paramount Comedy can refer to a number of different comedy television channels operated by Viacom under the Paramount brand:
Paramount Comedy 1
Paramount Comedy 1 is a television channel shown in the UK, available through digital satellite (Sky Digital) and cable (Virgin Media and UPC Ireland). As the name suggests, it is owned by Paramount Pictures (itself owned by Viacom) and concentrates on comedy. Paramount was not the first all-comedy channel in the UK; that distinction goes to The Comedy Channel, which had closed some years earlier.
Paramount Comedy launched in the UK on 1 November 1995 with timeless comedy such as I Love Lucy, Mash, Frasier, Cheers and Ren & Stimpy. The channel quickly established itself as a springboard for new talent, including Matt Lucas and David Walliams, Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, Leigh Francis and Sasha Baron-Cohen to name but a few; in 1999 Paramount Comedy join forces with LWT and Channel 4 to produce the pioneering sitcom Spaced, written by and staring Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes (formerly Stevenson).
The channel commissioned stand-up comedy both on-air and live events, attracting big names such as Lee Evans, Peter Kay and Russell Brand. Its programming portfolio extended to include America’s biggest comedy Two and a Half Men in 2004, the controversial animated satire South Park was in 2005 and The Sarah Silverman Program, which debuted in the UK in 2007, exclusively on Paramount Comedy. Paramount Comedy 2 was unveiled as the UK’s destination for classic comedy from the US and the UK, including M*A*S*H, Frasier, Monty Python and Black Books, in 2004.
Paramount Comedy announced on Thursday 12 February that it will to re-brand as Viacom’s international comedy brand Comedy Central on Monday 6 April 2009.
Paramount Comedy 2
Paramount Comedy 2 is a television channel shown in the UK and Ireland. The channel was previously a so-called 'time-shuffle' service, offering programmes from Paramount Comedy at different times. It has since started broadcasting some different programming from Paramount, often British. It launched on 1 September 2003 on Sky Digital, and followed soon after on 22 September 2003 on Telewest and 15 October 2003 on NTL (both NTL and Telewest are now known as Virgin Media). Unlike Paramount Comedy 1, Paramount Comedy 2 does not (yet) have a separate adstream for Ireland.
Paramount Comedy (Spain)
Paramount Comedy is a channel available in Spain through satellite platform Digital+ and cable services. It belongs to the Viacom group.
Paramount Comedy 1 (Ireland) Paramount Comedy 1 is a channel available in Ireland through satellite platform Sky and cable services UPC Ireland, SCTV, Magnet Networks and others. It belongs to the Viacom group. Launched in May, 2006, the channel is essentially the UK Paramount Comedy 1 channel with Irish advertisements replacing the default UK adverts. There are no differences in the programme schedule.
