Nityanand was born in Mumbai into a musical family and showed indications of prodigious
abilities at a very young age. His father, Niranjan Haldipur, a senior disciple of Pannalal Ghosh

continued under the late Chidanand Nagarkar, and Devendra Murdeshwar.
