Before his career as an MP began, he was the Principal of John Leggott College Scunthorpe, one of the top 10 colleges in the country. He was the Leader of North Lincolnshire
Council from 1997-2003. after leaving university he taught English at Greatfield High School in Hull (his parliamentary predecessor had also taught at this school). He then taught English in Gävle
in eastern Sweden
then came to teach English at the John Leggott College

He represents many issues related to Education and holds strong views against raising tuition fees, funding cuts for 16-19 year olds – a speech is available here http://www.nicdakin.com/page17.html. He also feels strongly about retaining EMAs and has recently questioned the Secretary of State for Education about catering facilities in further education establishments. He is now also a member of the Education Select Committee.
He is very concerned with debt regulation to avoid the pitfalls of people borrowing from loan sharks, and recently initiated a Westminster Hall Debate on Debt Management Plans.
Nic is very supportive of young people and since his election in 2010 the constituency office has had many young volunteers, who have contributed enormously to the successful running of the office. Nic is a member of over 20 APPGs, including Sustainable Housing, Financial Education for Young People and Conservation and Wildlife. He is the vice chair of APPG for Biodiversity, the secretary of APPGs for Cannabis and Children, and Education, and also the treasurer for APPG on Debt and Personal Finance.
A new APPG is being formed, the All Party Parliamentary Group on the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experimentation. Nic will be the chair of this group, and will be working with people such as Professor Balls of Nottingham University.
He has received answers to 118 written questions in the last year, and has spoken in 110 debates – well above the average for most MPs!
