Face Up was produced by husband and collaborator Ian Devaney (who had produced her two previous works, So Natural
in 1993, and the self-titled Lisa Stansfield
in 1997). Most of the tracks on Face Up were composed by Stansfield and Devaney.
, where it left the charts after only two weeks, and did not enter the U.S. Billboard Hot 200 at all. It was also her only album which did not chart in Italy

was supposed to be the disco-sounding anthem entitled "8-3-1", but it was withdrawn, due to lack of interest for the artist at the time.
In spite of the lack of commercial success, the album received an enthusiastic review by Nigel Williamson, who actually contributed to the artist's remastered albums project, writing all of the new sleeve notes. Williamson's review included track-by-track analyses and descriptions, where Stansfield and Devaney's songwriting abilities are compared to respected icons in the field, and Stansfield's soulful singing stylings are compared to both classic and contemporary singers.
