Boston Public Schools (BPS) assigns students based on preferences of the applicants and priorities of students in various zones. Due to the geography of East Boston, all East Boston high school-aged residents are guaranteed seats at East Boston High School.
The school offers various Advanced Placement courses, honors courses, and two languages, which include Spanish
and Italian
. The school also accepts students with disabilities under its Special Education department. Bilingual Education such as ESL
classes are also offered. According to the December 2008 school report, the school is made up of 62.9% regular education students, 18.5% special education students, and 18.4% bilingual education students.
The school has an Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps
, or simply known as JROTC, that students may take upon request. It also has its own sports like the Drill Team. Once every year they take the team down to Daytona Beach or Washington D.C. to compete with other school across the nation. They also have the Raiders Team which is mostly about hard physical training . They have the Rifle Team and get to compete against other schools in the district.

Most of the students come from East Boston; some commute from other areas of Boston. In the 2009-2010 BPS Report on Teaching & Learning, the school reported to have about 1350 students.
