Daniel Gooch
Sir Daniel Gooch, 1st Baronet was MP for Cricklade from 1865 to 1885 and the first chief mechanical engineer of the
Great Western Railway from 1837 to 1864. He was the brother of John Viret Gooch. He eventually rose to be Chairman of the
Great Western Railway.
He is often referred to as Daniel Gooch Bart. He was responsible for laying the first ever transatlantic cable, as chief engineer on the SS Great Eastern .
From 1859 he lived at
Clewer Park in Windsor.
