History

Burleigh Community College is nearly three hundred years old. The origins can be traced to the will of Bartholemew Hickling, a leading citizen of Loughborough, who in 1683 provided an endowment for a girls’ school – to match the existing grammar school for boys. The Hickling School for Girls opened in 1690 and lasted till 1876 when, with pressures of industrialisation, it became the Hickling Boys’ School. In 1917 it underwent a further change becoming a Junior Technical College under the control of the remarkable Dr Schofield’s Loughborough Technical Institute (or the Loughborough College as it became known). In 1921 the word “Technical” was dropped and, as Loughborough Junior College, the school became a grammar school for boys.

The first boarder joined the school in 1952 and 10 years later Field House was purchased to house 50 boys from overseas.

In 1938 came yet another change of name; this time to Loughborough College School. Then followed the merger with the Junior College of Art which saw the readmittance of a handful of girls after a break of 75 years. Mr Hickling would have been pleased.

With these increasing numbers the new buildings were planned and in 1957 the College moved to its present site at Thorpe Hill. In 1967 Loughborough College School became a co-educational, upper school taking pupils from fourteen to nineteen under the Leicestershire Plan. In 1971 the boy boarders moved to Charnwood Hall, newly purchased by the Leicestershire County Council and Field House became the boarding house for girls (today both boys and girls use Field House). In 1972 Burleigh Community College was founded “as a base where all members of the community can be involved in their own education”.

In 1997, Burleigh became one of the first six sports colleges in England. Since then they have acquired a national and international reputation for delivering high quality, innovative and comprehensive programmes in sport and physical education

Campus

Burleigh has a large facilitated campus, which is spread over four main blocks; K, S, E and G, along with Sports Facilities. Block G is mainly homed to the English, Expressive Arts, Music, PE Theory and the majority of the Science departments. Block G also contains the Main Hall which is where assemblies are held for the lower school and Year 12 (as the Burleigh Centre has become too small) and the main canteen. Block G also houses the Gymnasium, Multi-Workout Gym and a changing room that can be used by either gender PE group. Block E is another large block which is located furthest from the main road, residing nearer to the fields; this is where the ICT, Business and Humanities departments are all situated as well as the School's LRC (Learning Resource Centre / Library), the Post16 only area (The Grove Room) and a dance studio. Block S is fully dedicated to lessons such as Design, Textiles and Art, containing the necessary equipment and rooms for these subjects and numerous computer access rooms, it also houses a dance studio. Block K is the newest out of the four blocks and houses Languages and Mathematics. Meanwhile Biology has a separate set of classrooms which are attached to S Block and are also counted as part of S Block. The school has the added bonus of a Sports Centre, Sports Hall, heated indoor swimming pool, outdoor pitches, an athletics track and all weather pitch.

The Community

As well as students using the Colleges facilities, most are open for adult classes as well, Burleigh catering for an approximate thousand people of the local community each year. On site there is a Nursery and an all day open day care centre for adults with physical disabilities. Many of the local primary/infant schools and high/secondary schools (Thorpe Acre, Boothwood, Garendon High School

) use the sports coaching and swimming pool, in lessons.

Results

In 2007, Burleigh became the most improved school in Leicestershire moving from 43% 5A*-C to 57%.

Unfortunately after the 2009 ofsted report the college was put on Special measures
Special measures
Special measures is a status applied by Ofsted and Estyn, the schools inspection agencies, to schools in England and Wales, respectively, when it considers that they fail to supply an acceptable level of education and appear to lack the leadership capacity necessary to secure improvements...

due to the following reasons:

Safeguarding

The school did not comply with government requirements for the safety of pupils. (A technical problem of not having updated their policy on the official database).

Equal Opportunities

The college failed to tackle the differences in performance between boys and girls. (A technical problem of not having updated their policy on the official database).

Attainment

Attainment has remained consistently low over the past three years and students have made significantly less progress than they should in English and mathematics.

As of October 2010, less than a year since the school was put on special measures, Burleigh Community College passed a follow up inspection by ofsted and is therefore the fastest school to get out of special measures. Many people see this turn around as unfair.
