Geography

Au has an area, , of 4.7 km² (1.8 sq mi). Of this area, 42% is used for agricultural purposes, while 4.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 47.8% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (5.9%) is non-productive (rivers or lakes).

The municipality was part of the Unterrheintal district until the creation of the Rheintal Wahlkreis. It is located in a narrow pass between Heldsberg and the Rhein river. It consists of the village of Au and the hamlets
