He received his Medical Doctorate for his work on the "Effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition on norepinephrine reactivity and catecholamine metabolism" (magna cum laude) under the guidance of Thomas Phillipp and completed his post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the University Klinik Benjamin Franklin. In 1995, following a research year at the Eccle's Institute of Human Genetics, Salt Lake City, UT under the guidance of Jean-Marc Lalouel, he received his Habilitation (PhD - Equivalent) and was appointed Professor of Medicine (C3) at the Free University of Berlin. In 2000, he was appointed Professor of Medicine (C3 - tenured) at the Humboldt University - Charite, where he worked at the Franz-Volhard Klinik in the department of Nephrology (under the guidance of Friederich Luft). From 2000-2002 he was also Resesarch Group Leader at the Max-Delbrueck Centre for Molecular Medicine. in 2002 he was awarded a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Cardiovascular Obesity Research and Management and was appointed Professor of Medicine at McMaster University
