On November 22, 2008, it was decided to allow phone customers with a 415 area code the option of retaining their original phone number, while switching to either area code 510 or 650. Given the 415 area code's strong affiliation with the gay commnunity of San Francisco, some individuals reported instances of being mistaken for homosexuals by people in other regions of the country, often to the detriment of their professional, personal, and social lives. Individuals who request such a change will receive their new phone numbers starting in December of this year.
