The Manchester South District line, and consequently Withington & West Didsbury station, closed in July 1961.
The original cobbled station approach road and wall are visible off Lapwing Lane, and the remains of the station platform are also still visible down in the overgrown embankment.

Located on the site of the old Withington & West Didsbury railway station, the stop will be east of Palatine Road & adjacent to Lapwing Lane, in the existing cutting. Passengers again will be able to travel by rail from West Didsbury for the first time since 1967. The new station is scheduled to open in the summer of 2013.
