The event was established in 1998, and it was given Listed status the following year. It was promoted to Group 3 level in 2006, and it is now Britain's first "Group" race of the year.

The Winter Derby is run on a Polytrack surface, and it is currently one of three non-turf Group 3 events in Britain, along with the September Stakes
