. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Elassona
, of which it is a municipal unit. It was created as a community in 2006, when it was separated from the municipality of Elassona
. It has a population of 2,507 people (2001 census), and lies in the northwestern part of Larissa peripheral unit, 40 km. from Larissa
. It has a land area of 57.791 km², and consists solely of one town, the town of Tsarítsani.

period. It is one of the biggest villages of the Prefecture
that was at its peak in the 16th century. Its mansions are popular tourist destinations.
The commune was founded (refounded?) on March 15, 2006 under law 3348 in which it separated from Elassona

The town was known as Melouna (Μελούνα) before it was annexed with the rest of Greece
