Economy

Two decades ago agriculture was the main occupation of people. Paddy and Cholam are the predominant crops. But now, the indigenous economy of this town is based on agricultural products and jewellery. Thuraiyur's economy has witnessed a significant role played by the handloom manufacturers. With the advancement of powerlooms, it has lost its significance. But still, handloom is one of the main occupation among the people of Thuraiyur. Also many present generation youngsters are leaving this town to metropolitan cities like Chennai

Maruvathur

Maruvathur, a clean ecological village is located 9 km North to Thuraiyur. This village is surrounded by Venkadathanur, Sengaatupatti, Kirambur, Sellipalayam, Renganathapuram and Krishnapuram. Narasingapuram

Narasingapuram is a beautiful village located 9 KM away from Thuraiyur, Trichy District. Also this village is famous for temples. The temples are Karuppanna Swamy (near to Pachamalai), Venkatajalapathy Temple, Ganesha Temple and Mariamman Temple. Another temple small mount temple god murugan is located this village here famous fastival on celebrate in May. The total population of this village is 6,000. Buses from Thuraiyur to Narasingapuram via PerumalPalayam are available once an hour from 5.30 a.m. to 9.45 P.M.

There is a famous Cricket team in Narasingapuram called as "Narasingapuram Cricket Club"(NCC). NCC organises cricket tournaments once in a year during January month. It's a great tournament about 30 teams from nearby villages participate.

Narasingapuram still famous for Agricultural Dependence and great Cultural Values.

Sikkathambur

Sikkathambuer is one of the most beautiful village. Located 7 km away from Thuraiyur, Trichy District. Also this village is famous for temples. The temples are mariyamman kovil, perumal kovil, chinna mari and priya mariyamman kovil, saamayi kovil located in green field. Marudhai veeran kovil, pattavan kovil. There is a famous sports stadium called sikkathambur chinnasamy stadium.
There is famous Cricket team, volley ball team, kabadi team. Every year there will be tournaments for cricket, volley ball and kabadi.

Kanapadi

Kanapadi is one of the most beautiful villages. It was located 14 km away from thuraiyur, Trichy District. It was fully surrounded by mountains, it has falls named as vellamani falls and it consists of many famous temples such as koggudiyan temple, perumal temple which situated in the middle of pachamalai hills and it has river which was the entrance of kanapadi. There was a river which always contains water even in summer season it was just behind to karrupu temple. The name nadupatti has been changed as "Kanapadi". The main people situated here is scheduled tribe 'Malayali'.

Great Temples in Thuraiyur

Thuraiyur is also famous for the temple Prasanna Venkatasalapathi, situated in the Thuraiyur-Perambalur road. Prasanna Venkatasalapathi temple lies at the top of Perumalmalai that lies 960 feet above ground level in Pachamalai hills, 3 km from Thuraiyur in Tiruchirappalli district.A fine BT road is provided in that hill, so that cars and light vehicles can straitaway reach the top of the hill.It's a fine tourist and picnic spot also.
This temple is said to be constructed by the grandson of Karikala Chozhan. The kings are later named as Karuppannar and Veeraswamy and they are worshiped in the temple. Musical pillars are available. Hundreds of devotees take part in the Girivalam procession around the Perumalmalai hillock on all full-moon days. Though only an elementary school (i.e. Gandhiya Manya Elementary School) is located in this village, many have graduated degrees from colleges.
Also Thuraiyur is famous for its Nandhikeshuvarar aalayam, (a shiva temple) and a Vishnu temple which were built many centuries before.

Kamaraj, the famous Tamil politician of the 1960s, during his initiative to educate the unprevileged and downtrodden Tamil people, funded Thuraiyur Zamindhars to start this school. Majority of the existing population of Thuraiyur and the neighbouring villages are alumni of this institute. This school is also renowned for encouraging students towards sports.This school got lot of awards for sports,NCC,NSS,JRC and other activity.

Sengunthar Hr Sec School,Raghavendra Matriculation School,Vimala Matriculation School,Sowdambika Hr.Sec.School and Infant Jesus Matriculation and also the Great C.S.I higher secondary school(lol):p are the other Schools in Thuraiyur.

Jayaram engineering college and Nehru memorial college are located 7 km and 12 km from Thuraiyur respectively. Nehru College was started by a local businessman who was a great visionary and philanthropist. Apart from the above colleges, Imayam and Sudharsana colleges are located within 5 km distance.

, rainwater from the nearby hills fill the Periya Eri (bigger lake) that is used to irrigate the surrounding agricultural lands. When the lake reaches its maximum level, safety valves are opened to drain the excess water into the neighbouring Teppakulam (Pool belonging to a Hindu worship place) through an underground canal. Another underground canal also runs through the heart of the town from Periya Eri to Chinna Eri (smaller lake), to irrigate the fields located to the south of Thuraiyur.

The nearest railway station and airport is located in Trichy. There are direct buses available to Coimbatore

The new by-pass connecting perambalur road and (musiri - thuraiyur) branch road improves transportation and it also reduces travell time and traffic jam inside the town. Heavy vehicles such as goods carrying lorries, vans, cars can use this way to reach (musiri - thuraiyur) branch road in time.
