The East Tambaram branch library of the Kancheepuram District Library Authority is located in Gandhi Park, which has been functioning from a building built by the Tambaram municipality for more than five decades. It has 1,290 registered members and gets more than 200 readers daily, but has space for only about 15 people. Opened in July 1957, the library has 38,145 books and subscribes all periodicals, news magazines, weeklies and journals. An amount of 1.7 million was allotted from Tambaram MLA's local area development funds to renovate the building.

The Municipality

Prior to 1964, Tambaram was a small panchayat. In 1964 it was constituted as a Grade III Municipality comprising the Village Panchayats of Pulikoradu, Kadapperi, Tambaram, Irumbliyur, and Selaiyur. Due to rapid development and growth of the town commercially and residentially, the Municipality is now classified as a 'Selection Grade Municipality'. The population as per 2001 census is 1,33,667 besides a floating population of more than 1 lakh

per day. In 2011, the population increased to 176,807, registering a decadal growth of 28 percent. The extent of the municipality is 20.72 km².

The revenue villages under this municipality are Pulikoradu, Kadapperi, Tambaram, Irumbliyur, and Selaiyur. The number of households is 26,333, the number of notified slums is 17 and the number of unnotified slums is 7.

The Tambaram range comprises forest lands in Nanmangalam, Madurapakkam, Tambaram, Pulikoradu, Kumili, Vandalur, Onnamancherry, Erumaiyur, Vattampakkam and Vadakupattu.

The most famous road in West Tambaram is the Shanmugam Road which is one of the busiest roads in the city. The eastern part of the road is the commercial centre while the western end is called the Medical centre. Tambaram has famous hospitals and diagnostic centres like Hindu Mission Hospital, Deepam Hospital, Philips Hospital, AG Hospital, VN Hospital etc. It had three theatre

Parks

Tambaram municipality has four parks. It is renovating 15 other parks within its limits at a cost ranging from 0.5 to 4 million. Under the plan, the park at Ganesh Nagar will be built at a cost of 600,000 over 14,400 square feet of land. Construction of the park is expected to be completed by June 2011. The work order for the park was given on 23 February 2011. The new park would have a tiled foot path, a fountain, concrete seating arrangements, play equipment for children, lighting facilities, water taps and a garden with herbal plants.

In January 2011, renovation of the century-old park in West Tambaram located adjacent to the Tambaram police station, off the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road, began at a cost of 4.85 million under the Community-Based Environmental Scheme 2010-2011. Spread over 3.6 acres, the park is visited by more than 2,000 residents every day. As the park also has a few temples, it also attracts devotees. While 80% of the funds were provided by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Agency (CMDA) in the form of a grant, the rest has come in equal parts from the residents and the local body's general funds. Plans for the park include a cascade, artificial fountain and pond. Around 3,500 sq m will be converted into a lawn, and 10,500 ornamental saplings will be planted. It will also have a tiled footpath covering a distance of 555m with 20 LED lights. More than a dozen concrete slabs and 20 benches will be places in the park.

With the opening of several parks such as Gandhi park in East Tambaram, Thirupur Kumaran park in Selaiyur and Krishna Nagar park and the creating of parks at Burma Colony and Bharathi Nagar, the number of parks within the municipality limits has increased to about 18.
