he was the Head of the Mathematics department 1973–1976 and Dean

between 1978 and 1983. In 1983–1995 he was the Rector
of the Linköping University
. He had a leading role in the development of the medical faculty (Hälsouniversitet) and Campus Norrköping
.
He is the son of former Swedish Prime Minister
Tage Erlander
and has published several of his father's diaries.
