Dr. Azam claims to have worked as a doctor at Tehran
's Baghiattulah military hospital
before fleeing Iran. On June 27, 2003, the unconscious body of Kazemi was brought in for examination, and Dr. Azam testified that he had observed many signs of beating and torture on her body. Because of the extent of the injuries, the staff at the hospital was unable to operate, and Kazemi died the next day of respiratory arrest. Dr. Azam fled the country after seeking permission to leave to seek treatment for injuries suffered during the Iran-Iraq war
. He and his family instead fled to Sweden
, before arriving in Canada
on 28 March 2005. He was accused by Iranian authorities, without substantial evidence, of being a mental patient who found an easy way to become famous overnight.
