. It is about 3 kilometers to the east of the island capital of Vila Nova Sintra. The village is linked by a narrow road to the island capital and to the harbour of Furna. Santa Bárbara can be reached by "Aluguer" busses.

There are a school, a small church, a sports ground and some small shops in the village. From the eastern part of Vila Nova Sintra there is a beautiful view of Santa Bárbara from a viewpoint shaped like the "Santa Maria", the ship of Christopher Columbus.

In former times, Santa Bárbara was famous for a mineral spring called Fonte do Vinagre in the southeast of the village. The water had an acid taste and was used for medical purposes and for the irrigation of the fields. A pool and a bathhouse which was built in the 19th century can still be seen. The spring ran dry at the beginning of the 21st century.
