Geography

The village is surrounded by rocky and grassy mountains with a small valley to the southwest. The town of Vila Nova Sintra can be seen above to the southwest as well as the island's tallest mountain Fontainhas

History

Furna became the most important harbour of Brava in 1843.
In 1982, many boats and some houses of Furna were destroyed by waves reaching a height of up to 10 meters which were caused by the storm Barryl. The harbour was improved in 2000.

Other

Today, Furna features a school, a middle school, churches and a square (praça or prasa), its nearest high school is in Vila Nova Sintra. There are several small shops and bars in Main Street. The new yellow school near the small church in the South of the village, which was paid by the government of Belgium, is worth a visit: There are large wall paintings motivating the children to save as much water as possible and to help keeping the island green.
