Irma Johnson is the sister of the late Warren Johnson, thus making her the aunt of Eve Russell. Irma and Eve were close when Eve was young; Irma was very proud of her niece's singing ability and loved to brag about her. Their relationship became strained when Irma went to visit her then-young adult niece in Boston and saw her wasting her voice singing in a seedy jazz club, drugged out of her mind and cavorting with several men. The last straw, however, was when Irma discovered that Eve was carrying a white man's child. Eve and Irma didn't speak for nearly twenty years as a result. Later, when Irma was unable to live on her own any longer, Eve paid for her aunt to live in a retirement home
