. The other five toppers have been Sitakanta Mohapatra(in 1961),Purna Hota(in 1962),Lalit Mansingh(in 1963), Hrushikesh Panda (in 1979) and Prafulla Chandra Mishra (in 1982). Roopa says she grew up in a very encouraging environment where she interacted with "leading people from every walk of life." Her husband Anshuman Tripathy, who was a student of the IIM Calcutta, encouraged her to take the examination after two years of marriage, which took place in 2000, after which Ms. Mishra had worked at the Directorate of Distance & Continuing Education of Utkal University for over a year before she decided to quit job and start preparing for this national level examination.

She was posted as the Sub Collector of Khurda/ Khordha from September, 2006 to May, 2008. She was then posted as the Deputy Secretary in Home Department of the Government of Orissa from May 2008 to July 2009. She got promoted as the District Magistrate and Collector and her first posting was in Nabrangpur district of Orissa from July 2009 to May 2010. During her stint as DM & Collector of Nabrangpur, she had taken prompt and stern action against few School authorities allegedly involved in molestation of female students of the school. She had also done commendable job in the health care sector for the poor in the district toiled hard for successful implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act Scheme (MGNREGS) and worked towards industrialization within the district by working towards establishing a processing complex for processing of the abundant maize produced in the district during her brief stint in this district.
