Media coverage

The 2006-2007 school year brought about the first death of a student, Josh Shelton, who died upon hitting a tree with his vehicle late one night. He had just turned 16 and had recently obtained his license at the time. His death sparked a tremendous response from the student body, showing support for his family and each other. The second student death occurred during the 2008-2009 school year, when Kaitlyn Fitzgerald, a member of the 2009 graduating class, finally lost her ongoing battle with cancer. The student body again showed its support by creating a volleyball series in her honor, named "Spike Leukemia," which is held annually every volleyball season.

During the 2010-2011 school year, Reagan suffered greatly. During the beginning of the year, the school lost its softball coach Ray Chandler due to a long-term illness. On January 9, 2011, fellow student Nick Doub was killed in a car accident after losing control of his car on black ice. His death, like Josh Shelton's, received a huge response from the student body; the student body & Nick Doub's family showed their support by creating the "Nicholas Doub 'Doobie' Scholarship" for students at Reagan High. On March 15, horticulture teacher Chuck Warren died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This was the same day in which the teacher was suspended with pay for alleged inappropriate conduct with another student who had graduated during a previous school year (2009). On March 18, freshman Brooke Edwards was killed after being struck by a vehicle while walking across the street after a high school field hockey game in front of West Forsyth High School. The school was also followed in the news during January of the same year when a lead member of the track and cross country team, Forrest Lyerly, was arrested outside the school for attempted robbery with a deadly weapon at a nearby gas station. On May 10th of 2011, Jessie Davis, a senior, lost her lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis.

On August 27th of 2011, just two days after the start of the new 2011-2012 school year, freshman Devante Calderon drowned in a lake off of Olivet Church Road.
